Rumors have been floating around about it, but it’s finally been confirmed that the Apple’s current favorite show of all time has been renewed by the Beeb for a second series. Given that Our Man Adam is the show’s Designated American and has been prominently featured in promotions for the show, we assume he’ll be back in action as well, but we’re withholding a modicum of excitement in case Homer Jackson’s deep dark secrets make him a one-and-done character. Previous rumors had the show starting up production again in April and running through August, so we can presumably look forward to its return about the same time next year. Unless Adam’s not going to be back. In which case, this show will be dead to us.

According to the Guardian, Ripper Street “has averaged 7.1 million viewers (in the UK) and a 22.9% audience share so far, according to consolidated ratings including seven-day catchup viewing.”

Update (12:05 PM):

Creator and writer Richard Warlow said of the renewal: “I am enormously grateful to have been given the opportunity to return to ‘H’ Division once more and will be working tirelessly to ensure that those who have joined us each week will find ever more compelling crime-fighting thrills down on Ripper Street the second time around. The series will move forward into the 1890s: the death rattle of a century coming to a close, the labour pains of a modern world on the rise. It is this sense of climax and calamity that, week by week, our heroes will confront with conviction and heroism.” Still no unambiguous confirmation of Adam’s involvement in the Greatest Series on Television/the Biggest Missed Opportunity on Future Television. We remain on tenterhooks.

Update (2:49 PM):

No big surprise, but, according to Deadline, Ripper Street will continue to be a co-production with BBC America. Quoting executive producer Simon Vaughn: “Partnering with BBC America was always our ideal scenario and it has proven to be a wonderful decision. They have given the series an amazing launch in America and we are delighted to be moving into series two together.”
