THE MOBSTER WILL SEE YOU NOW (#CI9013)
EPISODE PREMIERE: June 22, 2010

Several years ago, two doctors struggled to realize their dream of owning a hospital. In order to secure financing, DR. JOEL SILVERSTEIN and DR. SHELTON SPRING were forced to turn to a friend – HENRY DI PIANO, entrepreneur and son of a renowned mob boss. Henry, in his own desire to become an honest businessman, convinced a group of retired mobsters to invest in the endeavor.

The plan worked beautifully, until one day LES TARNEY, a mid-level government official with the Department of Health and Human Resources, came to pay doctors Silverstein and Spring a visit. As it turns out, the doctors had been overcharging their patients for routine procedures. Instead of turning them in, Tarney has decided to blackmail the doctors. They complied, terrified at what will happen should their mob financiers discover the scandal. Just when all seems lost for the doctors, a miracle occurs. Les Tarney chokes on his own dinner. Unfortunately for them all, Nichols and Stevens see Tarney’s death for what it really is – murder. Before their investigation is over, more than one innocent will pay the price for their crimes.

We’re pretty fact-free at this point, but, look, it’s the back of Adam’s head!

More details on the future of the now-canceled Ex List comes to us by way of a November 18th “Ask Ausiello” column on Entertainment Weekly‘s website:

Question: Why, oh, why did The Ex List get canceled? — Lily

Ausiello: Elizabeth Reaser is asking herself the same question. “I don’t quite know what went wrong,” she lamented at Monday’s Twilight premiere. “Not enough people watched it, I guess, is the simplest reason. I was having a good time on the show. I liked the idea of the show. I never quite understand how ratings work or time slots or how they make the decisions to cancel a show. It is very hard for a new show to survive these days unless they are a blockbuster hit from the pilot. But I really don’t know what went wrong. I am at a loss and disappointed and I think everyone on the show and involved in it felt the same way. But we aren’t alone. A lot of shows have already been canceled.” The good news? Ex List will complete its 13-episode order with an eye towards international sales and a DVD release. “I’m still shooting the show, which is odd,” she admitted. “The scripts have been rewritten to give [fans] some closure. [Bella] will figure out which ex is the one. I do find the guy, and it’s someone we met in an earlier episode.”

Former showrunner Diane Ruggiero’s plan for the end of the first season was noted in a previous post, two posts down. No spoilers have yet emerged on what the actual ending noted here by Reaser will be.

Now that The Ex List is no more, what’s next for the show? There are at least four unaired episodes, as evidenced by their respective galleries at Nice Girls Like TV, and rumor had it they cast as many as twelve. So we’ve got that to look forward to, either as a strike-related filler or possible future DVD release.

More importantly, was Adam’s Augie the great love of Bella’s life or what? One-time showrunner Diane Ruggiero had her own game plan for the first season and tattled to E! about what she would have done had the show made it a full season and had she not left the show partway through that hypothetical first season due to “creative differences.” Still no word on what the people actually running the show at the time of the cancellation had planned, but it’s better than nothing. It’s not really a spoiler, but we’re still hiding it after the jump.

SEMI-SPOILER ALERT from Diane Ruggiero:

“My plan was to end the first season with Bella getting married. Marina (the psychic) told her that she already dated The One and that if she didn’t marry within the year she’d never marry. She never said she had to marry The One within the year.

“Soooo, my plan was to have Bella hook up with an old college ex around episode 13. In the past, he had just started dating someone when he met Bella. He fell for Bella and dumped his girlfriend, only to have his relationship with Bella last for like a day. Now she meets up with him again. They hit it off like crazy. One problem, he’s engaged. The episode ends with Bella not wanting to wreck his engagement. She’s worried that she’s letting the prophecy cloud her judgment and she doesn’t want to ruin someone else’s potential happiness. Anyway, long freakin’ story short—episode 19 he comes back. He had ended the engagement anyway and is available.

“Bella, in the meantime, has entered a new phase in her relationship with Elliott. He’s her new best friend. And she’s had a huge fight with Augie and their friendship is on the rocks. The clock is ticking. She tells College Ex about the prophecy. He says they should get married. They head to Vegas. Elliott rushes to Vegas to stop them. He’s too late. Right after they tie the knot College Ex is telling a stranger at the casino the story of how he met Bella. He mentions that they were both dating someone else. Bella is confused. She was single when she met him—we flash back to a college party—Bella and Augie enter. She sees someone she used to date and doesn’t want to appear to be at the party alone. She tells Augie that he is her boyfriend for the night.

“Basically, Bella gets married then moments later realizes that Augie is the one. That was the season one plan.

“Hope you don’t think it blows.”

Sadly, it appears so.

While the Apple has been unable to find a formal cancellation notice anywhere — and we know that there are several episodes “in the can” that have yet to be broadcast — it looks like THE EX LIST is officially kaput.

CBS has even pulled the EX LIST pages from their website. I’m not sure why that was necessary; they could have at least been archived.

Et tu, CBS webmaster?

You can find more information about THE EX LIST‘s premature demise here and here.

As for the un-aired episodes, maybe they’ll pop up magically as schedule-filler at some point, or perhaps end up on a DVD release of the show in some vague, pastel future. We certainly hope so.

In any case… EX LIST, we hardly knew ye….

More Unearthed Artifacts:

Ex List TWoP archives
Videos still available for sale on iTunes and at Amazon
This site still appears to be adding episode stills
Episode information can be found here
Finally, there some information here about the theme song; it’s available for purchase at iTunes
